MET Weather API https://api.met.no/ Services available via the MET Norway Weather API WeatherAPI developers Airqualityforecast **Forecast of air-quality for locations in Norway** This API implements a forecast of air-quality for a location in Norway, i.e. the forecast of several parameters relevant for air-quality. Besides a general air-quality index, the main parameters for air-quality like PM10, PM2.5 and O3 are given under the "/aqi-description" endpoint. A location in Norway is defined by the statistical units area-class which are a municipality (kommune), a part of a municipality (delområde) and grunnkrets, the smallest area unit for statistics in Norway. Air-quality and concentrations in the finest resolution are available as maps under <https://uemep-wms.met.no>. https://api.met.no/weatherapi/airqualityforecast/0.1/ weather Aviationforecast **Textual aviation weather forecasts** This product delivers text forecasts in TAC format for aerodromes and IGA (International General Aviation) flight areas below FL 100. Aerodrome warnings are issued irregularly only when conditions require it. Aviation forecasts are only available in English. https://api.met.no/weatherapi/aviationforecast/2.0/ aviation Frost **REST API for meteorogical observation data** The Frost API provides free access to MET Norway's archive of historical weather and climate data. This data includes quality controlled daily, monthly, and yearly measurements of temperature, precipitation, and wind data. Other information, like metadata about weather stations, is also available through the API. https://frost.met.no/index.html weather observations Geosatellite **Images from geostationary satellites** This service delivers images captured by geostationary satellites, in the visible and infrared spectra. New images are produced at least every hour, in some cases every 10 minutes. Images are provided for a specified area and specified time. If no time is given, the latest available image will be returned. Restrictions The data are considered free and unrestricted, according to section 4 of the EUMETSAT Data Policy <https://www.eumetsat.int/website/home/AboutUs/WhoWeAre/LegalFramework/Dat aPolicy/index.html?lang=EN> which states that: 4 "ESSENTIAL" METEOSAT DATA AND PRODUCTS EUMETSAT shall make its Hourly Meteosat Data, all Derived Products and Advance Image Products available to all users world-wide on a free and unrestricted basis, regardless of when and how these are made available to the user, as "Essential" Data and Products in accordance with WMO Resolution 40 (Cg-XII). https://api.met.no/weatherapi/geosatellite/1.4/ images Gribfiles **Serve GRIB files on the coast from Oslo and Western Norway** This product make some of our GRIB files available for access and download. The content is made to support yachts and yachting. Note that these files are meant for downloading and used with external software. The data are delivered with content type application/octet-stream. The area covered is from 57°54'00"N, 4°26'59"E to 63°00'00"N, 7°00'00"E, in 0.05° increments. FIXME The files are updated every 3 hours, or maybe every 6 hours, possibly even every 12 hours (which is actually every 24 hours, but the files are produced twice). To see when a file was last produced, check the "updated" field in "available.json". If you need other parameters or areas, please look at THREDDS <https://thredds.met.no> (NetCDF only, no GRIB). https://api.met.no/weatherapi/gribfiles/1.1/ marine Icemap ** Maps howing current ice conditions in the arctic regions** This service delivers ice maps in JPEG format. They are made by the Norwegian Meteorological Institute’s IceService in Tromsø, and are mainly based on satellite information. The plots show different ice-categories (Fast Ice, very close drift ice, close drift ice, open drift ice, very open drift ice, and open water). The plot gives also information about the sea-surface temperature in the area. https://api.met.no/weatherapi/icemap/1.0/ marine IsobaricGRIB **GRIB files for air traffic** These files are used by Avinor ATM systems but possibly also of interest to others. They contain temperature and wind forecasts for a set of isobaric layers (i.e. altitudes having the same pressure). There are two different formats, GRIB1 and GRIB2. The files are (normally) produced every 6 hours. You can check the time when generated using the Last-Modified header or the `updated` key in `available`. https://api.met.no/weatherapi/isobaricgrib/1.0/ aviation Locationforecast **Weather forecasts for any location on earth** This service delivers weather forecasts for any given coordinate for the next nine days, in JSON and (deprecated) XML formats. There are several variants with different parameters, with most data for the Nordic region. For up-to-date precipitation forecasts, see our Nowcast service which is updated every five minures. The service is not suitable for forecasts above ground level. For aviation purposes, please see our IsobaricGRIB service. Each alert message (identified by its CAP id) is only issued once, and is valid until the "expires" time or updated by another alert message. The alert messages are delivered in CAP format <http://docs.oasis-open.org/emergency/cap/v1.2/CAP-v1.2-os.html>, as well as a listing of current warnings in an RSS 2.0 feed. Both are in XML format, but there is an experimental GeoJSON version in beta. Note that files can be up to 35 MB in size, so downloads can take several seconds. https://api.met.no/weatherapi/metgm/1.0/ defense NCAgalewarnings **gale warnings for the Norwegian Coastal Administration (Kystverket)** This service delivers gale warnings for the areas defined in Sjøtrafikkforskriften kap. 4 <https://lovdata.no/dokument/SF/forskrift/2021-02-10-523/kap4#kap4>, which must be avoided by ships over 150 m in length carrying passengers during wind conditions over 17.2 m/s. The following areas are included: * Stadt, stretch between Sildegapet and Runde lighthouse * Hustadvika, stretch between Buadjupet and Grip lighthouse * Folda, stretch between Buholmråsa fyr and Rørvik * Fugløykalven, stretch between Hekkingen and Fugløykalven * Sørøya, stretch between Hasvik and Tarhalsen * Honningsvåg, stretch between Fruholmen and Helneset The alerts are delivered in CAP format, see MetAlerts for details. All alerts have the event code "thresholdGale" and geographicDomain "marine". https://api.met.no/weatherapi/ncagalewarnings/1.0/ marine NLAroutes **Vertical cross sections for air ambulance flight routes** This returns various plots for flights used by Norsk Luftambulanse in PNG format. This currently includes vertical cross sections between two flight endpoints, as well as time graphs showing weather condition at different altitudes for the next 60 hours. The plots are generated from the MEPS forecast model and are updated every 6th hour. https://api.met.no/weatherapi/nlaroutes/1.0/ aviation Nowcast **Immediate weather forecast for specified locations in the Nordic area** This service delivers two-hour weather forecasts in GeoJSON or XML for locations in Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark. Forecasts are updated every 5 minutes. It is our best estimate of the current weather conditions, and is especially useful for predicting immediate precipitation. https://api.met.no/weatherapi/nowcast/2.0/ weather Oceanforecast **Ocean forecasts for points at sea in Northwestern Europe** Delivers wave and sea forecast in standard MET Forecast GeoJSON format <https://docs.api.met.no/doc/ForecastJSON>. There is also an XML variant, but this is considered legacy and exists only for backwards compatibility. The forecast is based on multiple wave and sea models. These are primarily intended for use at IPPC.no <https://www.ippc.no/>. https://api.met.no/weatherapi/offshoremaps/1.0/ aviation Polarsatellite **Images from satellites in polar orbit** This service delivers weather images on various wavelengths from satellites in polar orbit, covering several areas of the globe. Currently there is only one satellite (NOAA), but others are planned in the future. https://api.met.no/weatherapi/polarsatellite/1.1/ images Radar **Radar composite images for various areas in the Nordic** This service returns static images or animations for several areas, either for a specific time or the latest available image. Only one animation per area is available. There is no usage restrictions on any of the radar images. Note that specific radarsites may sometimes become unavailable. This is usually due to technical problems at the radarsite, caused by lightning/difficult weather conditions. Historical radar data can be found on THREDDS, e.g. via OPeNDAP: <https://thredds.met.no/thredds/remotesensingarchive.html>. https://api.met.no/weatherapi/radar/2.0/ images Routeforecast **Vertical cross sections for flight routes offshore and over land** This service returns vertical cross section plots for flight routes offshore and over land, given by ICAO ids. Routes over land have the prefix "iga". The plot ENHF-ENBJ is generated from the Arome Arctic model, all other plots are generated from the MEPS model. Plots are updated every 6th hour, approximately at 04 UTC, 10 UTC, 16 UTC and 22 UTC, and are available hourly up to +18 hours. https://api.met.no/weatherapi/routeforecast/2.0/ aviation Sigcharts ** Significant Weather Charts for aviation** This service delivers Significant Weather Charts in PNG format, covering the Nordic area, Svalbard and the Norwegian Sea. Charts are issued every six hours, valid for the hours 00, 06, 12 and 18 UTC. Charts for Norway are not produced during the weekend. At least 4 charts are available for each area. For more information, see <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SIGWX>. https://api.met.no/weatherapi/sigcharts/2.0/ aviation Sigmets **Aviation weather SIGMETs and AIRMETs for Norway** This service delivers all issued AIRMETs, SIGMETs and Windshear warnings for Norway. AIRMET (Airmen's Meteorological Information) is a concise description of weather phenomena that may affect aircraft safety. SIGMET (Significant Meteorological Information) is used for more severe weather conditions than AIRMET. Both are only issued when such conditions should arise. Both warnings are delivered in text-based TAC format (similar to Tafmetar). If no warnings are issued, a blank document is returned. Plots are updated from the ocean model *Norshelf* once a day, approximately at 04 UTC, in 6h steps up to +96h (00UTC +96h). When new plots are available, the files from the previous day are deleted. https://api.met.no/weatherapi/soundprofile/1.0/ marine Spotwind **Spotwind forecasts for airport landing systems** This service delivers spotwind data in XML format for various Avinor airports in Norway. The data is meant for input to Avinor's AMAN aviation landing manager. https://api.met.no/weatherapi/spotwind/1.1/ aviation Subjectiveforecast **Forecasts and analyses charts from the meteorologist** The meteorologists makes analysis and forecasts every day. Analysis is created at 00, 03, 06, 12 and 18 UTC. Forecasts (prognose_map) are made before noon each day for 12 UTC for tomorrow and 12 UTC for the day after tomorrow. https://api.met.no/weatherapi/subjectiveforecast/1.0/ weather Subseasonal **Long term weather forecast for specified locations in the Nordic area** This service delivers daily weather forecasts for the next 21 days in GeoJSON format, for locations in Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark. Forecasts are updated every hour. Parameters include temperature, precipitation and probability of frost. https://api.met.no/weatherapi/subseasonal/1.0/ weather Sunrise **Calculate sun or moon events, as seen from a specific location on Earth** Returns a GeoJSON document indicating time and direction to when the sun (or moon) is on its highest point on a given date (defaults to today) as seen from a specified point on Earth, as well as the preceding sun/moonrise and following sun/moonset (which may not be on the same date). The lowest point in the cycle is also returned. Note that any or all of these may be "null". The source code is available on GitHub <https://github.com/metno/celestial> or as container images. If you have a server it's much more efficient to run it locally than to query api.met.no. https://api.met.no/weatherapi/sunrise/3.0/ other THREDDS **Dataset archive including model runs and observation timeseries** General information ------------------- The THREDDS Data Server (TDS) is a web server that provides metadata and data access for scientific datasets, using OPeNDAP, OGC WMS and WCS, HTTP, and other remote data access protocols. thredds.met.no is an archive service operated by MET Norway for publishing historical and current research data. All datasets can be downloaded in NetCDF format or extracted using the OPeNDAP protocol. Some datasets can also be visualized using the WMS protocol. Forecasts are for 9 or 24 hour periods, in XML and (heavily encoded) text formats. METARs are issued every 30 mins, TAF every 3 hours. Historical data for Norway are available since the late '90s. Note: The TAF and METAR formats have been deprecated, to be replaced with an XML format called IWXXM <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IWXXM>. When ready, the Tafmetar service will be replaced by SWIM <https://swim.met.no/>, which uses OGC API EDR for queries. This will only deliver data for Norwegian airports, for other airports there will be a European distribution hub which you must access. https://api.met.no/weatherapi/tafmetar/1.0/ aviation Textforecast **Textual weather forecast for Norwegian land and sea areas** This module returns text forecasts in GeoJSON for land, coast and sea areas in and around Norway. Sea forecasts are in both English and Norwegian language (either bokmål or nynorsk), as well as special WMO terminology. This is indicated in the forecast name. Land forecasts are currently only issued in Norwegian. If you are looking for aerodrome forecasts, please look at the Aviationforecast product. Severe weather outlook (new) This product provides the meteorologist’s expert assessment of potential hazardous weather in Northern and Southern Norway for the coming five days. It is particularly intended to support emergency preparedness and response. The product is issued daily, except on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays. https://api.met.no/weatherapi/textforecast/3.0/ weather marine Tidalwater **Tidal water information** Water level forecast for a selected set of harbors in Norway. Weather condition adjustments are generally available for the immediate three days, in 10 min resolution. The files are updated 1-2 times per hour. Data is delivered as a fixed-column plaintext file. Values are given as meters above mean sea level (middelvannstand), and all times are in UTC. https://api.met.no/weatherapi/tidalwater/1.1/ marine Turbulence **Turbulence prognosis charts** This product returns a turbulence forecast as a PNG image. Two types are available, maps and cross sections. Forecasts are generated every three hours, for 0-18 hours ahead. This means that unlike version 1.1, you now must download each file several times to get current data. https://api.met.no/weatherapi/turbulence/2.0/ aviation Volcanicashforecast **Norwegian national volcanic ash products including forecast** This service offers links to the Norwegian national ash products for aviation in case of volcanic ash in the atmosphere near to Norway. The products include volcanic ash forecast images, satellite images and a report with further information. Results of this service can be seen on https://ippc.no or https://volcanicashtest.met.no during an volcanic eruption in Northern Europe. NOTE This is a specialized product for IPPC and is not very understandable or usable for others. As such we do not offer any support for this version of the product.
